If the System Fails You, Speak Anyway
If you’ve been betrayed, abused, silenced, and then—on top of all that—disregarded by the very systems meant to protect you… I see you.
When you finally escape the grasp of emotional abuse—especially the covert kind, the kind without bruises or obvious wounds—you expect some kind of relief. You expect justice. You expect to be believed.
But what happens when the system looks the other way?
What happens when the abuser weaponizes charm, money, or manipulation—and you, the survivor, are the one left trying to explain the invisible? My abuser lied, he didn't take responsibility for his role and I got the full blown blame for everything.
Too often, victims of coercive control, gaslighting, and silent abuse are treated as unstable, irrational, or hysterical by police, lawyers, or judges who haven’t been trained to recognize the patterns. The emotional neglect. The financial entrapment. The way abuse can wear a smile in public and a mask in court.
And far too often, it’s the victim who ends up punished—criminalized for reacting, jailed for protecting herself, dismissed as dramatic or angry while the abuser walks away untouched.
If that has happened to you—if our system has failed you—please know this:
You are not alone.
You are not crazy.
You are not wrong for wanting to be safe.
And you still have a voice.
If your story has been dismissed, let it be heard another way.
Reach out to your local MP.
Write letters. Make calls. Demand change.
Let them know that emotional abuse is real. That coercive control destroys lives. That silence wounds just as deeply as violence—and often goes unpunished.
Our local authorities and justice systems desperately need training in recognizing these tactics. The laws are behind. The systems are blind. And survivors are paying the price.
So speak. Even if your voice shakes.
Even if no one listened before.
Speak again.
Because your story matters.
And one voice—yours—can ripple into something bigger. Carlin
